How a drug meant for one disease can be
successfully used for another has been vividly proved in
the case of Metformin
(Glucophage).
This pharmaceutical product which
was intended for patients who are suffering from Type-2
Diabetes is sometimes used as an off-label prescription
drug for women who are affected by PCOS or the
ovarian cyst syndrome
.
There are actually quite a number
of reasons behind the efficacy of this dual functioning
drug. Apart from having problem with multiple cysts in
the ovary that prevent ovulation and cause infirmity,
women having PCOS are also insulin resistant. In fact,
it is one of the inherent characteristics of the cystic
disease. When the ability of the cells to respond to
insulin in transporting glucose from the blood stream
into the muscles and the tissues fail,
Metformin
helps the cell's
reaction to insulin by moving it into the
cell.
Studies have also revealed that Metformin helps
in inducing ovulation and normalizing the menstrual
cycle, thereby curing infertility to some extent.
Moreover, it is known to help alopecia, acne and
hirsutism in many
cases.
However, Metformin has its side
effects too. For instance, many women were forced to
discontinue it because of its adverse effect on the
gastrointestinal system. This included occurrence of
diarrhea, bloating and gas formation in the
stomach
. Metformin therapy is
believed to have effects on B12 absorption that may lead
to anemia.
Metformin contraindications also include liver
problems, renal function, hypoxic conditions,
alcoholism, and
others.
It is best not to depend on Metformin and other such conventional drugs and treatments. Because at best they just treat the symptoms and not the real causes, and of course, they also cause side effects. Opt for holistic remedies instead for cyst removal. Holistic remedies treat the root causes and not the symptoms, and so, the cyst goes away permanently.
